(BELIEFS)
Artemis believes in three things. The first is that if one has the ability to aid a bad situation, it is their moral responsibility to do so, even if it means interfering with business that is not theirs. In the past, this made her very self-righteous and preachy, but these days she only sets impossible standards for herself.
The second is that war and isolationism must be set aside in pursuit of truth. Scholarship is not the concern of the state and conversation should lack borders - she would like to live to see a world where commoners do not perish from entirely preventable, curable diseases simply because one nation is hoarding its knowledge of that disease.
The third is that it was her responsibility to end her life when she was cursed with lycanthropy. She cannot, because she also has a responsibility to her brother, so instead she must slay werewolves wherever she finds them in penance.

(PROFESSION)
She only advertises her services as a physician and herbalist in polite company. She has no shop of her own and can only manage to grow certain herbs within the six-to-eight months her condition allows her to remain in one place, but she has found contentedness in travelling between villages and tending to the people of Oathia and Glacia who cannot afford true healers. While she occasionally sells the ingredients she cultivates or forages, she treats and educates the ill for no charge.
She makes her money under the table. Every spring she visits a major city and posts an advertisement in every tavern she can find:
"FOR THOSE IN NEED OF A SPECIAL BREED OF HUNTER:
DO NOT LIVE YOUR LIFE IN FEAR OF LARGE WOLVES OR FANGED MEN.
IF IT BLEEDS, IT CAN DIE. LEAVE WORD FOR ARTEMIS AT AMALIA'S BREWHOUSE."
(with Amalia's Brewhouse as an example for the room she rents that year)
Monster hunting is an exhausting profession with a low life expectancy, but for someone who spends most of their time suffering through the lycanthropic allergy to alchemy every day of her life, it's cathartic, in a way. Medicine can be used to heal only when care is taken with the dosage, but using it to poison is another matter -

(TEMPERAMENT)
She comes across as a mild, thoughtful soul, charitable and aware of her actions, though her bedside manner can be stern and she is often opinionated in matters she knows nothing about. She rarely angers - in truth, when Artemis is treated poorly she tolerates it because thinks it's deserved. She loathes herself for the countless lives she has taken in the thirty-some winters spent as a werewolf, and for not taking her own when she had the chance. Selfless and fiercely intelligent, Artemis feels very strongly about her convictions and cares deeply, and does not take for granted the trust people put in her. Proud, sanctimonious, and profoundly insecure, she self-flagellates so often she has a hard time seeing reality for what it actually is and often decides she already knows what is best for everyone without their input.
(KNOWN MAGIC)
Artemis' Curse of Lycanthropy - Artemis was cursed by a spirit with her affliction, tied to the annual cycle of the spirit’s favorite tree. For the better part of the year, Artemis retains her sylvan form, but when the last leaf of the tree falls, she becomes a mindless animal. She is only allowed to come back to herself when it buds in spring. If the tree were to die or be cut down, she would stay a wolf for the duration of her life.
Apollo's Curse of Reverie - While not her own, her brother’s eternal rest is tied to her Lycanthropic cycle. When she has her mind, he is put in a suspended state. When she takes the shape of a wolf, he is allowed to be awake. While he does not need sustenance and cannot become ill while in this extended reverie, if he were slain, the deal would be broken and she would lose her curse and die from the poisoning it cured her of. If she were slain as a wolf, his curse would be lifted. If she were slain as a woman, he would remain in reverie until age took him.

(BACKGROUND)
Artemis was born to Elphir and Athari of clan Mistral three hours before her twin brother, Apollo. They were educated and thoroughly trained as children, though while Artemis, the phlegmatic twin, excelled, the more sanguine Apollo struggled and only took great interest in taxonomy, archery, and story-telling. As young adults, they endured a rite of passage that required a year of travel apart from the clan and heavy testing upon return. Apollo failed his exams and was ousted by the clan, but Artemis refused to be parted from him and left as well. They became adventurers and well-known monster hunters, with Apollo bringing his natural charisma and knowledge of beasts and Artemis bringing her skill as an herbalist.
They enjoyed a long and successful career until taking on a werewolf that bit Artemis’ arm. Though she did everything she could to purge the poison from her blood, she was unconscious and nearing death by dawn. In his desperation, Apollo sought out a spirit and asked to broker a deal with it.
So the spirit inflicted Artemis with a curse of lycanthropy and Apollo with a curse of reverie, and made it so that for as long as the tree it inhabited bore leaves, Artemis would have her shape and mind, but Apollo would be put in stasis. When winter came and the tree bared, she would become a beast again and Apollo would be allowed to wake and chase her.
For 35 years, the twins have existed this way. While one sleeps, the other searches for a solution that will allow them to hunt together again.
