Slimes/Oozes
Alchemists are still arguing over what these creatures are exactly, from where they come, how long they have resided in Mortalum or even, what is the difference between an slime and a ooze. What is agreed on though, is that slimes are the most adaptable creature in the known world, if not the whole cosmos. You can find them anywhere, even where life shouldn't exist, and they are a wizard's best friend, as well as their biggest bane. Slimes/Oozes are formed from condensed spiritual energy and a wide variety of different natural, as well as, unnatural elements. Similar to animals, they too have different abilities, skill sets and diets. The common factor is their semi-liquid bodies and never ending hunger.
Similar to spirits, and many think they are what is left after a spirit dies, these creatures are separated in three casts, lesser, common and greater. Most lesser slimes are visually similar (blobs of colorful gel) that have slight differences depending on their environment. In most cases they are strong, durable (except if receiving bludgeoning damage) and incredibly slow. Additionally, their bodies are corrosive. Common slimes are those with further specializations, like, being able to turn invisible, having highly toxic poison or being able to brainwash someone. These are the slimes alchemists often make and keep in their labs as pets/guards. Fast slime variants start to appear and, if nothing else, common slimes can grow to a size of a carriage.
Greater slimes are to be feared and the reason why some villages, as well as, towns have ended up disappearing over night after insulting a particularly mean spirited alchemist. Greater slimes have a wide variety of powerful traits and abilities, some even possessing limited magic. Some of these brainless creatures gain some level of intelligence. Some known to collect brains of their prey to increase their mental abilities. As a example and an interesting historical fact, after a group of sorcerer students gravely insulted the nearby village's alchemist the whole school ended up being devoured by a lake sized slime.
