Anise would like to believe there is softness in everyone, but is conscious that this may not be true, or at least not functionally so. More to occupy herself than a genuine belief, she likes to think perhaps she could sift clues from the sky and clouds if she only looked long enough, but in truth she puts little weight in any religion. She simply tries to do right by other people, and she's good at it.

Anise comes across as unfortunately soft in a world that isn't always kind, but beneath the gentle exterior she has oceans of patience, and is just tired enough to quietly wear through nearly any hardship. As an incredibly compassionate person, she'll go out of her way to help others if she can, even at her own expense. (BACKGROUND)
Anise was born to a middle- to high-class merchant family, but married younger than they'd planned, in the hopes of saving her family's sinking business. Fortunately, she and her husband got along well, and quickly came to love each other. At twenty-two, Anise gave birth to a boy, but he died only weeks later from a sickness in his lungs that the midwife said he'd been born with.
Anise started teaching herself to draw, and paying for lessons as well, afterward, to keep her mind occupied. A year later she gave birth to a healthy girl, and she and her husband were delighted. Anise sold drawings and portraits mostly for her own entertainment, as her own family's business and finances gradually recovered from their earlier failings.
When their daughter was two, her husband departed by ship to discuss on a potential new business partnership with a friend, and his entire ship disappeared at sea. No storms, no debris, no bodies were ever found, and a year later, the entire list of sailors were declared dead. At times, Anise wonders if it wouldn't be better to find he'd died, rather than simply washed up somewhere with no memory of how he'd arrived there. Because if he someday returned, she would have to tell him how their daughter had eaten flowers from the garden, and died.
When her husband had been declared dead, and with her daughter gone, Anise walked up to the castle and requested work looking after the children who lived within it. In only a few months, her knack with children and her patience caught the attention of someone in or near the royal family, and Anise was promoted to a caregiver for the royals' children. She had no skills in defending them from physical assault, but she was educated, and kind, and dedicated, and there were always guards in reach.
She has now been working in the castle for eight years.
